Used To

What is Used To?

Used to describes habits, repeated actions, or states that existed in the past but no longer happen or exist now. It implies that things have changed since then.

Positive: subject + used to + infinitive
Negative: subject + didn't use to + infinitive
Question: Did + subject + use to + infinitive?

Note: in negatives and questions, the form is use to (no d), because the past tense is carried by did/didn't.

Positive Examples

I used to live in London. (I don't live there now)
She used to play the piano every day. (she doesn't anymore)
They used to be best friends. (they aren't now)

Negative & Question Examples

He didn't use to eat vegetables, but now he loves them.
Did you use to walk to school?

⚠ Common mistakes:
✗ I use to play football. → ✓ I used to play football. (positive needs -d)
✗ I didn't used to like it. → ✓ I didn't use to like it. (no -d after didn't)

💡 Remember: Used to only exists in the past. There is no present form. For present habits, use the present simple or usually.
